Leather And Embroidered Patches
Jan 23rd, 2012 by crafter

Embroidered patches can be dated all the way back to ancient Asian civilizations; they have been around for centuries. However, it is only recently that we have been able to attach them to our clothing using heat activated glue and a hot iron. It is possible to attach them to nearly all fabrics without having to get your needle and thread out. That’s good for your fingers, your patience, and your schedule. However, when it comes to attaching embroidered patches to leather with a hot iron, you may have a problem; that is, in the traditional sense.

Hot Temperatures and Leather Do Not Go So Well Together

When it comes to attaching embroidered patches to clothing with a hot iron, what you are actually doing is heating up the glue on the back of the patch until it gets quite soft. It is necessary to apply quite a bit of heat in order to get the glue to the required consistency and the problem is that applying this much heat to leather could damage it.

It’s true that leather is a very durable material, but the surface is easily damaged by concentrated heat sources. So we are left with two problems. First of all, the glue will not adhere to the damaged leather and the patch will fall off. And when the patch does fall off, the leather will be left with an ugly mark where the iron has burned it. The same can be said for vinyl and various sorts of faux leather. Another thing to consider is that even if you could find a way to make the glue adhere, one slip of the iron that brings in contact with bare leather will leave a burn mark. So it’s never a good idea to use a hot iron anywhere near your leather goods.

Is There Another Way?

Earlier we mentioned that attaching iron on patches to leather was difficult in the traditional sense. We use the term “traditional sense” because there is a non-traditional method that works well. What this means is that there is special glue that you can use along with an unheated iron. Yes, an iron that is not heated. You are only going to be using your iron to press the patch on.

You’ll need that special glue in order to make this work; not just any glue will be suitable, as leather is a very difficult substance to work with. You can find this specialized glue at craft stores, sewing shops, and even some high-end leather goods specialty stores. It is important to make sure that you can use this glue on leather and the way to find this out is to read the instructions on the bottle. Failure to do this could mean that you are just going to be wasting your money.

To mount your embroidered patch you simply spread the glue on the back of it, following the directions on the glue bottle, and then carefully lay it in place. You can then use the cold iron to press down on the patch until it sticks. Once the glue has set-up you’ll be able to release the iron and let the patch dry. Make sure you know for certain where you want the patch to be before you lay it down. Once you have placed the patch on the leather, you cannot remove it or you will be left with a stain.

Learning To Be Creative

If you are an artist and a musician, you could have a lot of fun making your own piano bench cushions or piano stool. Some people are more creative while others are more technical and would much rather work on math and science than paint, sew, or do anything that involves thinking outside the box. This does not mean that artists cannot be scientists, but they can be two different personalities. If you like art, you are probably very creative and imaginative. How cool would it be to make stuff for your home or for your hobbies?

There are many different hobbies out there and everyone has at least one. It could be music, painting, sewing, being athletic and being involved with sports, or many others. Over all, being artistic allows you to have many advantages because you can make your own things and customize them however you want. If you like to sew, you can make your own handbags, cushions for chairs or benches for the piano, blankets, clothes, and much more. Cushions are great things to have on piano benches because it is important to be comfortable and still be able to play properly. If you are stuck practicing for hours on end, it can get tiring sitting through all of that, so by making yourself a cushion to sit on, you can enjoy many more hours of practicing. You can even match the fabric with the other decorations in your home.

Padding for a piano bench is not the only thing you can make with some fabric and a sewing machine. By taking scraps of fabric, you can make scarves, blankets, and many other things, even rugs. All it takes is some creativity and a few scraps of whatever you can find to make something that you can decorate your home with or find useful. You can even sell them and make a business out of it.

Have you ever wanted to have something for your home and you were not successful at finding it in the stores? You can easily fix that problem by making it on your own. By playing around with a sewing machine, you can always figure out how to use it. You can either buy some fabric at the fabric store or make your own. Buy patterns and trace them onto fabric and paint them on with something that will not wash out and then you have your own fabric.

You do not have to be an artist or a musician to be a creative person; you do not even have to be good at art to make certain things. A lot of people get discouraged from art when they cannot draw a picture with a pencil, but art is so much more than that. There is no one definition of art so if you begin to have an interest in something and think of something that is creative, go with it and teach yourself more until you can come up with more ideas.

Arts and Crafts; How would i make a mini umbrella?

im making a replica of something and I want to make an umbrella. like a normal umbrella you use when it rains.but a mini version. like really small. maybe like 3-4inches high and 2-3 inches wide?? what materials would i use??like for the metal and fabric part

Do you want something that actually operates (open and closed), or just an open umbrella or a closed umbrella. And how much realism do you want?

Without more info, just try some of these possibilities:
